From the Dark Empire comic series by Dark Horse, Leia takes up a lightsaber to confront a reborn Emperor and pull her brother Luke back from the dark side. Part of the 1998 Expanded Universe sub-line where Kenner stepped outside the films for the first time, drawing from novels, comics, and video games. Each figure in the wave came packaged with a cardboard 3-D diorama backdrop.
Leia's lightsaber was originally planned with a blue blade during the prototype stage but was changed to red for final production. The same lightsaber sculpt was reused for Luke Skywalker and Clone Emperor Palpatine in the same Expanded Universe wave.
